The History of Murano Glassmaking

At the end of the 13th century, glassmakers working in Venice were moved to the island of Murano because the city feared that their furnaces might set fire to the wooden buildings. However, they were forbidden to leave the Republic, and sharing glassmaking secrets with the outside world could be punishable by death. By the end of the 16th century, glassworkers and their families accounted for a significant share of Murano’s population.

Murano glassmakers led European glass production for centuries, perfecting techniques such as crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), golden glass (aventurine or goldstone), multicoloured millefiori, milk glass (lattimo) and glass “gemstones”. Today, genuine Murano glass is still made by a limited number of highly skilled artists who guard their methods as closely as ever.
